NLC Orders Nationwide Strike

Report: Tunde Eso

NLC directs workers to shutdown CBN offices nationwide   On Wednesday, the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) instructed all workers to picket all offices of the Central Bank of Nigeria across the country beginning the following week due to the current cash crunch in the country. On Wednesday in Abuja, NLC President Joe Ajaero issued the directive during a press conference.

Following the expiration of a one-week ultimatum issued to the central bank to make cash available to Nigerians, the labour leader stated that the directive had become imperative.

The NLC issued a one-week ultimatum to the CBN and commercial banks last week to make naira notes accessible to workers and Nigerians.

The organisation stated that it would instruct employees to remain at home if the central bank failed to provide Nigerians with naira notes.

Last week, we issued an ultimatum for a review of the cash crunch afflicting the nation, but to our dismay, we have discovered that the government is still dragging its feet on addressing the issues we raised.

Based on this, we reassessed our position this morning and decided that by next Wednesday, all CBN branches will be picketed.  "Workers are also directed to stay at home because people cannot eat, and workers are no longer permitted to report to the office. We've been pushed to the edge, so we've decided to take our fate into our own hands and have mobilised our employees for this exercise," Ajaero said.
