Sustaining Democracy and Improving Good Governance in Nigeria

By Paralinguistic Omenamkpo LeGuru Odumeh

Since the post-colonial era, Nigeria has had a tumultuous history with democracy and good governance.

Despite being Africa's largest democracy and having had multiple "successful elections," Nigeria still struggles with sustaining democratic values and promoting good governance throughout the country, as the recently concluded election demonstrates.

For example, Section 134(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) is clear and unambiguous, directly and simply, of the requirements for one to be declared the winner in a presidential election, the candidate must receive at least one-quarter  of (25%) of the votes cast in two-thirds of the Nigeria's 36 states (that's in 24 states).

In addition, the candidate must gotten at least 25% of the votes cast in the federal capital territory FCT.

However, there was a flagrant violation of this section when the electoral umpire, the independent electoral commission (INEC), went on to declare the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) as the winner and the President elect Tinubu whom the entire NigĂ©rians and the entire world saw him crystal clear as a total failure and loser as long as the election is concerned.

Very recently the Vice Presidential candidate of  the Labor party Dr. Amed  Datti,  was quoted as saying on a liveTV "that any attempt to swear Tinubu in as the president elect, is nothing but an end to the African biggest country democracy and a coup d'etat.

Nigeria must ensure that every citizen has equal access to the political process in order to sustain democracy.

The electoral system must be transparent, free, credible, and fair, with policies in place to promote accountability and prevent electoral fraud. The electoral commission's independence must be ensured, people of proven integrity must be allowed to serve as INEC officials, the navigator if INEC as the national chairman henceforward, mustn't be any of all these plagiarists acclaimed professors, even myself as an European civil engineer university degree holder and as a zero corrupt activist is eligible and capable of been the INEC national chairman that nobody can outshine or intimidate or bribe to compromise to any illegality as to satisfy him or her, civil society organizations must be encouraged to carry out monitoring activities to ensure transparency.
I'm committed in what I can do for my country and not what my country will do for me. I so much believe that money is not everything, No, it's character that is everything for the only thing that walks back home from the tomb with the mourners and refuses to be buried with the dead is the the character of the man or woman. This is true. What a man or a woman is survives him or her and can never be buried.

Improving good governance begins by fostering a culture of transparency and accountability across all levels of government. The leadership must ensure that all government programs, projects, and initiatives are aligned with the national development plan, and efforts are made to promote fiscal prudence, reduce corruption to minimal, and promote transparency in the public sectors and at all levels.

One critical area in which Nigeria can improve is security. For example, in the recently concluded election, voting did not took place in a well over 240 polling units, according to the electoral umpire, due to insecurity across the country, including my own polling unit mostly in orlu zone in imo state.

Democratic values cannot be promoted or sustained in the absence of a sense of security. The government must take significant steps to address the country's systemic issue of insecurity. A police force that is properly equipped trained with principles, and motivated can ensure that citizens' fundamental right to life and property is protected.

All levels of government must promote the rule of law. This includes discouraging the executive branch from selectively obeying court orders , as well as ensuring that the judiciary is independent and not subject to manipulation by any other branch of government.

It is also critical to provide adequate funding and infrastructure to facilitate effective justice administration.

All  These can be accomplished by constructing and maintaining functional courthouses,  and correctional centers throughout the country.

Police, lawyers and judges must be committed in maintaining the justices of what the constitution and the law says.

Finally, more significant investments in education, health care developmental, and job creation are required. Providing quality education and healthcare services will not only improve the lives of Nigerians, but will also promote long-term economic growth across the country. When people have access to quality education, they can gain knowledge that will help them positively contribute to the growth and development of their communities, which will help to discourage rural-urban migration, become self-sufficient, and reduce the incidence of poverty.

Lets unanimously as one people make our country Nigeria great again!

The average Nigerian doesn't care which tribe the President comes from, they only want the person with the right ideas and right philosophies to lead them. Peter Obi proved with evidence that he is the one, and they voted for him, massively.

I bet you and I'm ready to stake one billion dollars, if this  presidential election is conducted  ten times over and over, Peter Obi will still defeat and must still  plunge Tinubu and Atiku into the Abyss of high ocean again. Which is called in french language " Aller jamais rĂ©tour"

It is only political rascals who campaign for or against candidates purely in the basis of their tribes or religion or their selfish interest. And it is only political rascals who would attack people, physically or verbally, because you assume they are not going to vote for your preferred candidates.
