My Apprise for a Better Nigeria
By Mobolaji Bello
With a sincere heart, I say congratulations on your successful inauguration as The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Indeed, it was a contest well fought for and you thrived victoriously.
As the campaigns were in heated moments, you were asked in one of the interviews what's your first day in office will look like and you affirmed by stating that you will hit the ground running. Indeed, you have, by taking the first bold step in the fuel subsidy saga.
This has taken it's own toll on the ailing economy and has also spread a wide shock on the faces of many. But the question being asked is: What is in it for the common man? If these policies are indeed for the betterment of our economy, how then can it be redirected to produce upward trend to the livelyhood of the poor and average Nigerian out there.
I believe we can get things right through thorough implementations of productive policies by following through and if possible micromanaging those saddled with the responsibility of implementing these policies so as to see the dividends and progress been charted out.
There might be recompense if the smuggling of our petroleum products is not tackled head on. Most marketers will prefer selling outside the shores of Nigeria which may lead to scarcity in-house.
We can take a cue from our legal tender same way for dollar and other currencies; in which a benchmark was created comparing neighboring countries to ours. If these benchmarks are created, the price of petroleum products may skyrocket and Nigerians may be forced to pay #650 and above per litre.
I believe that if this government focuses more on security, health care and education (human capital), we will become a great hub in no time, our economy will have a remarkable stability and the weapon of hunger and poverty will be crushed outrightly.
As a nation, we are yet to tap into the industrial revolution of our resources. Though the world has since moved from this era, We, Africans are still not there yet.
Human capital development will extremely help to move this movement so as to drive major productions of our resources on all spheres.
A rugged and rigid approach to production; both extraction of raw materials, semi finished goods and output production will not only drive us into self sufficiency, but will engage our youths, increase government revenue and also help balance our export system.
On infrastructure; the government should introduce various indirect subsidies and focus on transportation. The focus should be more on high capacity transport system such as rail and mass transit (within states and inter states). The government should be a major player so as to be able to regulate and determine affordable pricing. This will enable various indirect subsidies to take shape in the transport system to reduce inflation.
In terms of direct subsidy, cooking gas and electricity should be subsidized. This should solely target the SME's, for the good of the common man and the rebuilding of the crunch economic impact the citizens may have to face in this challenging periods.
