Leaning Tower of Pisa
By Ola Babatunde
On 9 August 1173, the foundations of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, in Italy, were laid. However, the ground on which these foundations were built could not properly support the weight of the structure, and the tower began to sink.
Over the following centuries, numerous reconstructions and corrections were made to salvage the tower from collapsing. In 2008, engineers announced that the tower had stopped moving for the first time in its history, and that it would be stable for at least 200 years.
